Monday 17 September 2001NEW LOCKERS ARE ENCOURAGING PUPILS TO PEDAL A Plymouth secondary school has installed 44 cycle lockers to encourage students to bring their bikes to school. City manufacturers BikeAway estimate that if the lockers are fully used they will save 16,000 car journeys a year to and from Plymstock School. The upright lockers have enough room for the entire bike, as well as a helmet and other clothing. BikeAway says the lack of secure parking is the biggest deterrent to cycling to school. And the lockers have already proved
a hit with pupils and even staff. All the lockers are now being used and
the school reckons cyclists have come 'out of the woodwork'. Business manager Paul Edwards said:
"We had them filled without any problems, not just by pupils but by some
staff too. They were chuffed to bits, as were the pupils. "BikeAways are nice and easy to use,
with somewhere to store your gear. The thing most people like is that
you can get your bike out within seconds and be on your way. "We probably had around 15 bikes on
site a day before, but once the BikeAways became available all the would-be
cyclists came out of the woodwork. We give the pupils priority, but three
or four of the staff use bikes too." The school is the fourth in Plymouth
to install the lockers. Estover Community College was the first community
college in the country to buy them two years ago, followed by Stoke Damerel
Community College and Parkside School in Devonport. The city's total of 156 lockers have
been subsidised by the road safety department of Plymouth City Council. BikeAway says every pupil saves two
car journeys a day by cycling, adding up to about 300 trips a year. It
is estimated that about 8,000 cars make the run to Plymouth schools every
morning. BikeAway was set up at Newnham Business
Park in Plympton two years ago to market the lockers, dreamed up by entrepreneur
Jason Hamlyn. The company, which has five staff, has
since sold more than 1,000 lockers to schools, hospitals, businesses,
universities and private companies nationwide. Spokeswoman Joanne Parr said: "We have just become a limited company and we are developing new products, including a domestic locker." |
