Westcountry Business August 2000

Firm's profits move up a gear with bicycle cabinet storage idea.

Company orders race up with new design

BIKEAWAY the firm behind a revolutionary cycle parking cabinet designed and built in the Westcountry, has started manufacturing products for its largest order to date - 174 lockers for railway stations throughout Kent.

The cabinet, which keeps cycles safe from thieves, vandals and rain, was chosen by Kent County Council in a competitive tender against other cycle locker manufacturers.  More than 25 of the Plympton-based company's cabinets have already been installed, and the long term contract will keep workers at the Westcountry factory busy for some time to come.

BikeAway was designed and launched last year by Jason Hamlyn, a Plymothian entrepreneur who spotted a gap in the market and set out to produce the ultimate secure cycle parking locker.  The result was a cabinet that is about a third of the price of his competitors, takes up a fraction of the space, and is so user-friendly that anyone can store a bike in it in seconds.  Plymouth City Council bought the first 50 BikeAways for Estover Community College, and the cabinets have since been ordered by Stockport Council for railway and bus stations, Devon County Council for County Hall, a school in Enfield, Middlesex, and by Sainsbury's supermarkets for all their stores.  The ongoing Kent order, which will be followed by another of a similar size next year, was confirmed on the day that BikeAway took delivery of a £440,000 machine that will make it even easier to produce the steel cabinets at the factory in Newnham, Plymouth.

"It's a fantastic bit of kit," said BikeAway's managing director Jason Hamlyn.

"And the Kent order vindicated our confidence in ordering the machine.  BikeAway is being embraced by local authorities and rail operators throughout the country because of its innovative design and world-beating price."

Plymouth City Council has since bought a further 82 BikeAways for Stoke Damerel Community College, the firm's first repeat order, and the school in Enfield is expecting to order another 60.

"People keep asking what the secret of our success is," added Mr Hamlyn.

"But there is no secret.  All we are doing is giving cyclists what they want, rather than what other manufacturers would prefer them to want, and at a price that means people can afford it rather than just envy it.  Local authorities have not missed the fact that they can buy three times as many BikeAways for their money, and that BikeAway has such a small footprint that you can fit more of them into a smaller space."
